Evaluation Question 4

How did you use media technologies in the construction, research, planning and evaluation stages?

·         Photoshop

o   I used this program for the majority of my printed work, as it is a desktop publishing software I am familiar with. I think using software you are comfortable with is vital to creating a professional looking piece of work.  I found I had learnt a lot from my work last year in terms of how to use the software and my limitations. For me the most challenging aspect of creating the cover/advert was finding the right brightness and contrast levels for the work after I had added the ‘posterization’ effect; an effect that adds more block colours and more solid outlines to the shapes. I feel my skills have developed exponentially since I started my foundation portfolio in year 12, as I have learnt to use various filters and techniques to a degree that looks professional.

·         Storyboard printouts

o   I printed out copies of storyboards so I could hand draw the diagrams. I believed this would be easier and allow for more detail than creating the images using solid shapes and lines in a computer program.

·         Final cut

o   I did all of the editing for my final product in final cut; which was my first experience with this product. I quickly got to grips with the basic transitions and filters however came across difficulties when importing video files from the camera to the apple mac, after a couple of attempts I was told it would be easier to import the files from the camera directly into final cut. Although it was my first time using this software I feel I managed to create an ample piece of work however due to time constraints was not able to use the software to its full potential.

·         PowerPoint

o   The majority of my research is presented on Microsoft PowerPoint documents, as I found it easier to integrate images and text on this program. As well as this it is easier to use for taking notes and making small pieces of work than a program such as Photoshop. The only disadvantage I found with this is that I could not upload directly to Blogger, so instead I converted the slides into JPEG files and uploaded them as images.

·         Blog posts

o   As our course needs to be presented on the website Blogger all work should be presented on our own blogsites, I wanted to make sure my work was presentable. I chose a contrasting colour scheme that would emphasis the text. Though this is not particularly important, I do believe presentation plays a big part in any blogsite. Due to bloggers inability to upload slideshows I saved each slide individually as a JPEG and uploaded each slide separately.

·         IMovie

o   I used iMovie briefly when I began so I could work out which program would be best for me to use. I soon realized that iMovie, whilst having a simple layout and was easy to use, did not have the range of features I was looking for; such as grain filters, white noise generators, colour correctors, and audio filters. I also wanted to add a zoom out and rotate effect on an image for one of my videos. I found this much easier in final cut than in iMovie.

Ancillary Task - Create a Video Game Cover

As I wanted my game to be multi platform (to appeal to a wider audience) I have designed the game cover in the dimensions and style of the three larger gaming platforms, Microsofts Xbox 360 and Games for Windows, and the Sony Playstation 3.

Game Developer Logo

For my ancillary task I was to create a game cover to go with the advert, a prominent part of all video game covers is the developer logo, often displayed in the bottom corner of the product.
I chose a dark background with an outer glow that would distinguish it against darker colours on other products and a bright green main colour to contrast the background and text. I wanted the image to stand out so I tried various effects and shadows until I came across an image that looked 3 dimensional. I think the text also catches the eye due to the cracks and irregularity in the shapes.

Creating the Storyboard

When creating my storyboard I  wanted to put as much detail into it as possible including specific times
for each scene and matching each scene to a part of the song which would be played over.
As well as this I will be including a change of tempo within my advertisement which will involve changing the track to another song, because of this I have had to work out the timings for the two and worked out a way to link the two without having a solid cut between them. The most likely option will be to fade in and fade out or possibly layer one over the other whilst they fade in and out.

The images shows myself finding appropriate times in each song then working out what each scene will include and timing both so they sync in the right places. As well as this I plan on including a voiceover which will mean adjusting the volume of the tracks and working out the timing for a third layer of audio; the first two being the soundtracks and actual sounds in the video clips themselves.

John Fiske - Theory of Conventions

John Fiske (1987) states that generic conventions "Embody the crucial ideological concerns of the time in which they were popular".

This statement can be applied to all forms of media, however I will be focusing specifically on video games. The statement basically says that all pieces of media can tell us about the world they were produced in (what is fashionable, what isn't, and what people considered conventional at the time). For example video games of the current generation would probably show a world where war is incredibly prominent (taken from the popularity of games such as Call of Duty, Battlefield, Medal of Honour etc.) as well as this we live in a world that is almost obsessed with the future, and where the human race will go (evidence being in games like Portal, Metro 2033, and Fallout).

In my plan and general ideas I have included aspects such as crime, the monopolisation of just about everything, high-rise cities and deprived sub-urban areas. Without even realising that I have conformed precisely into Fiske's theory, as these are all subjects with feature prominently in todays society.

The theory can actually be taken much further than this, with media also reflecting current fashion, the way different areas of society are represented, celebrity culture, ideologies of power and wealth being obsessively interlinked, and even the spoken language and how it has take shape at the time of production (different slang words used, the lexical ambiguity so often used in advertising).

Game Cover Design

This game cover is what i will base my design on, it is a style that Rockstar Games have used for a number of years. It shows a variety of features available in the game as well as a number of characters. The number of panels is usually kept below ten and a pastel effect is applied afterwards to give the cartoon-like effect.
